Discussion of Records

What can one learn from these records?

Birth

Philip Paine was born 3 Jul 1838 in Brasted, Kent, England (record 1).

Family

His parents were David Paine and Martha Lavender Paine (record 1). There's information on them here.

Marriages

Philip Paine married (1) Kate Doran on 1 Mar 1865 in Rockland, Ontonagon County, Michigan (record 7), and (2) Frances M. Edwards on 19 Jun 1879 in Houghton County, Michigan (record 13). Frances Miranda Croft had previously married William Edwards on 7 Oct 1868 in Houghton County, Michigan (record 9).

Spouses' Families

I haven't identified Kate Doran's or William Edwards' parents. Frances Croft Edwards' parents were William Croft and Margaret Carmichael Croft (record 5, record 21).

Children

There were children by all three marriages for a total of at least 10 (record 14, record 17):

Martha A. Paine, daughter of Philip and Kate Paine
Rizpah Paine, daughter of Philip and Kate Paine
Augusta Sarah Paine, daughter of Philip and Kate Paine
William Edwards, son of William and Frances Edwards
Mabel Edwards, daughter of William and Frances Edwards
Georgia Edwards, daughter of William and Frances Edwards
Eva Paine, daughter of Philip and Frances Paine
Mildred B. Paine, daughter of Philip and Frances Paine
Philippa Hazel Paine, daughter of Philip and Frances Paine
Frances Marion Paine, daughter of Philip and Frances Paine

I was told (and have forgotten the source) that Philip and Kate Paine had a daughter Kate after Augusta. I haven't found mention of her in any record.

Note that there was a Rispah and an Augusta in the Anthony family with whom Kate Doran was living in 1860 (record 6). This may indicate a family connection.

Residences

Philip Paine lived in Kent, England, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada, and in Houghton and Ingham counties in Michigan. Frances Croft Paine lived in Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada, and in Houghton and Ingham counties in Michigan.

Death

Philip Paine died 6 Dec 1828 in Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan (record 18).

Spouses' deaths

Kate Paine died 17 Feb 1878 in Houghton County, Michigan (record 12). William Edwards died between 1873, when his daughter Georgia was born, and 1879, when Frances Edwards remarried. Frances Paine died 3 May 1831 in Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan (record 21)
